Oil is NOT expected to hit the Beaches     On June 18th an in the Sun News stated the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico was expected to have little or no impact on Carolina Beaches. James Morris is director of the University of South Carolina's Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences near Georgetown. He says he doesn't expect the spill to result in birds covered in oil on the South Carolina coast. Professor Chuanmin HU of the University of Florida stated the oil has not gone into the 'loop current' and gulf stream which could bring it to the eastern coastal beaches. A representative of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Aministration states and oil that would reach the Carolina Beaches would be diluted.

                   May Real Estate Stats

The recent headline "Myrtle Beach AREA Real Estate Finds Footing" was welcome to see. Many believed the end of the tax credits would end the steady rise in local sales. Although one month is not a trend, May indicated that the area market does not always follow national trends. The MLS (CCAR) numbers have shown single family home sales rose 25% and condo sales rose 11% of the same month last year. Over that time frame single family home prices dropped 5% and condo prices dropped 1%. Tom Maeser, a local real estate analyst for CCAR believes there will not be a lot of changes from where we are now and we may see price increases by the end of summer. About 45% of sales were by cash, 46% conventional loans, and the remainder by FHA and VA. Surely current interest rates at such low levels are having a positive impact on sales.

                                 Foreclosure Listings

A Search of homes listed as in foreclosure at CCAR over the past 3 months found found 147 listings on June 19. Those listings are priced from $19,900 to $1,399,900. There are 85 condos and town homes listed in the Coastal Carolinas MLS listed from the same time frame.  are priced from $34,900 to $367,500. The Coastal Carolina Assn of Realtors MLS covers Horry & Georgetown counties. Some listings from the coastal area of N C are included.

Wish you were here, don't you wish it too?

A quick trip to Pa was made to be with my mother while she had biopsies done on her hip.Painful as it was she was a real trooper! It was great seeing my daughters and grandsons too. The boys will be here on the 26th for their 1st trip of the summer and will stay about 2 weeks. We took the neighbors boat out last week. Maybe one day I'll be able to do OK with a cast net but Bob caught the bait. We drifted for a while in hopes of catching dinner. It was impossible to keep the sharks off the hooks. Three of us each caught several 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 foot sharks and had a great time. I also caught a great sunburn.

Company will be arriving. They have plans for the beach, the planetarium, a Pelicans ball game, shopping, fishing, various music venues, and the lists go on and on.

There are at least 34 golf courses in Brunswick County. Has anyone played all 654 holes?

                           .....................................................
Two friends have a total of 3 timeshres available. These are for prime weeks in May and June/July. Anyone interested will be put in direct contact with the sellers.

                          Historic Southport
Southport NC is located about 20 minutes from the SC border. It is a small town on the coast with much to do and see. Southport was a working port town with canning factories and lumber mills. Today you will find antique shops, galleries, restaurants, and shops. Views are breathtaking. The town dates prior the Revolutionary War. Stede Bonnet, the "Gentleman Pirate" was captured in one of the local creeks while his boat was being repaired. The Yankees blockaded the port during the War of Northern Aggression. There are several books available at the Historical Society office in town. You can also catch the Bald Head Island Ferry for another day excursion. Shoppers and history buffs will find a day at Southport well spent.

SC reports you should look for flounder in North Inlet, Murrells Inlet, Cherry Grove and Tubbs Inlet hitting live bait such as mud minnows, finger mullet and menhaden. Look for red drum along grass banks, in creeks mouths and at area jetties hitting a variety of live bait. Piers have been reporting good bluefish catches in size and number. Near shore -Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, cobia, whiting, bluefish, flounder, black drum, red drum, black sea bass, sheepshead. Offshore gets even more interesting. Although wahoo, dolphin, blackfin tuna, billfish, grouper, black sea bass, vermilion snapper, cobia, amberjack, triggerfish are being caught it seems to be hit and miss for the trollers.
North Carolina - The Jolly Mon Classic held is being held as I type. There will be some large king mackeral caught, the largest takes a $25,000 prize. Good luck to all participants and have a great time.
The recent flounder tourney saw a 9.88 pounder take 1st place ahead of 7.5 pounds in second.
Warm waters have brought some changes earlier than usual. Naturally, the small sharks are being caught in numbers. Kings are still being caught near shore and from piers but numbers are dwindling. Specks are near shore at night but head to deeper cooler water as the sun rises. Other spieces, especially blues, are near shore if you can keep the sharks from your bait long enough to be found.
